The M16 is a lightweight, gas-operated rifle principally manufactured by Colt®. Tested by the United States Air Force in 1961, the M16 entered United States Army service in 1963 where it achieved widespread acceptance among US troops. Over 40 years on, new variants are still in use.
Features the American eagle with a border of stars surrounding this iconic American bird. Around the edge of this face is engraved the denomination (One Dollar) and the inscription 'America 2010 – Mesa Grande'.
Features the iconic M16 firearm along with the Colt® brand and Rampant Colt®. Above this is the engraved heading 'M16 Caliber 5.56mm'. Draped across the top of the coin are the stars and stripes of the American flag.
No more than 100,000 Colt M16 Brilliant Uncirculated coins will be issued by New Zealand Mint.
The coin comes encapsulated in a circular display case moulded in the form of a round of 5.56mm ammunition, with a printed outer box.
