Conquest of Space – First Space Walk

About the Coin

Celebrating the first space walk as part of the Conquest of Space series New Zealand Mint is proud to release the 1oz silver First Space Walk coin featuring  Alexei Leonov . Alexei Leonov was one of the twenty Soviet Air Force pilots selected to be part of the first cosmonaut group in 1960. He was outside the Voshod 2 spacecraft for 12 minutes and 9 seconds on 18 March 1965, connected to the craft by a 5.35 metre tether.

The rectangular shaped pure .999 pure silver coloured coin is limited to 5,000 sets only.

Reverse Design

With permission from Alexei Leonov presented on this coin in magnificent colour is a reproduction of his original painting that illustrated this historic achievement. Engraved in 3D relief is the space ship Voskhod 2 with Leonov walking in space connected by a 5.35 metre tether.

Obverse Design

The Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with decorative border.

Packaging

The coin is presented in a blister pack which also acts as the Certificate of authenticity.
