Chinese New Year also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It consists of a period of celebrations, starting on New Year's Day, celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar
The New Zealand Mint is proud to announce their first ever issue celebrating the Lunar New Year. This uncirculated issue provides a uniquely different approach to the Year of the Dog. We have focused on the characteristics of the dog itself and created a series that exhibit the wonderful features and character of the dogs themselves. The portrait style full colour drawings of the dogs have been individually painted in pastel colours by the world renowned pet portrait artist Sally Logue.

The obverse features an effigy of King Jayavarman VII, who reigned from 1162-1201, plus the value, 3000 Riels. |
| The reverse features a full colour image of the Russian Spaniel. It bears the inscriptions "Year of the Dog" (in English and Chinese) "2006", "1 oz 999 silver" and the breed name. |
RUSSIAN SPANIEL
Following WWII, urban Russian hunters sought a small hunting companion. To fill this demand, they created the Russian Spaniel, using a variety of European spaniel breeds. Their invention was recognized by Soviet dog authorities in 1951. In the 1970s, a few were exported to East Germany, where a following has ensued.
In areas with plentiful game, the Russian Spaniel has plenty of verve and ability to search, flush and retrieve feathered or small furred game. Although regions rich in waterfowl are dwindling in Russia today, the Russian Spaniel can make a good duck dog as well. His handsome appearance and agreeable nature make him a good companion, and most are kept at home. In general appearance, he is reminiscent of a robust and leggy Springer Spaniel. Easy to train, he is devoted to his master, never letting him out of sight.
There are four 2006 dated Chinese Lunar Year coins struck from 1oz of pure silver. No more than 5,000 of each coin will be issued by the New Zealand Mint. The coins are legal tender of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Each 1oz Silver Uncirculated coin comes with a four-page printed Certificate of Authenticity issued by New Zealand Mint.
