About the Design

Chinese New Year also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It consists of a period of celebrations, starting on New Year's Day, celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar

The New Zealand Mint is proud to announce their first ever issue celebrating the Lunar New Year. This uncirculated issue provides a uniquely different approach to the Year of the Dog. We have focused on the characteristics of the dog itself and created a series that exhibit the wonderful features and character of the dogs themselves. The portrait style full colour drawings of the dogs have been individually painted in pastel colours by the world renowned pet portrait artist Sally Logue.

Obverse

The obverse features an effigy of King Jayavarman VII, who reigned from 1162-1201, plus the value, 3000 Riels.

Reverse

The reverse features a full colour image of the Borzaya. It bears the inscriptions "Year of the Dog" (in English and Chinese) "2006", "1 oz 999 silver" and the breed name.

BORZAYA

Bred exclusively for the purpose of wolf hunting by the Russian aristocracy, the Borzaya is one of the most elegant and spectacular of all breeds. Rather like a Greyhound in build, but taller and with a long, silky coat which adds softness to his rather angular frame, the Borzoi is an agile, swift and courageous dog. Although the circumstances under which the Borzaya is now kept have changed dramatically from those of Czarist Russia, he nevertheless remains a true aristocrat of the dog world.

Affectionate and devoted to his owner, he is rather aloof and distrustful of strangers. He does need a good deal of regular exercise to keep him fit, and that exercise preferably includes a certain amount of free running and playing. The Borzaya is a very independent dog and does not always immediately respond to his owner's commands.

Limited Mintage

There are four 2006 dated Chinese Lunar Year coins struck from 1oz of pure silver. No more than 5,000 of each coin will be issued by the New Zealand Mint. The coins are legal tender of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Authenticity
