About the Design
New Zealand Mint is proud to launch one of cinema’s most enduring and beloved franchises, Star Wars, as a legal tender coin set. These coin series will be hugely popular for both Star Wars devotees and coin-collectors alike. This first series is a limited mintage and are quite simply out of this Universe. Reverse Design
The first series includes eight 1oz 999 Silver coins depicting the characters of the Star Wars movies packaged in two unique four coin sets. The coins feature a full coloured image of your favourite character duos of Luke Skywalker / Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi / Yoda, R2-D2 / C-3PO, Han Solo / Chewbacca. The second set of four coins feature the dark side including Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, Death Star, and a Stormtrooper.
Obverse Design
The obverse of the coin features The Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II.
Limited Mintage
Each coin in the Star Wars set is struck from 1oz of pure silver. No more than 7,500 of each coin will be issued by the New Zealand Mint. The coins are legal tender of Niue Island.
Packaging
The silver coin series will be packaged as two unique sets of four coins. One will be the Darth Vader head, and the other the Millennium Falcon ship, representing the dark side and the Rebel Alliance. Open the Darth Vader case and hear authentic movie sound effects of Darth Vader breathing. Open the Millennium Falcon case and hear authentic movie sound effects of the ship’s iconic “jump to light speed”.

Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia
Princess Leia, supported by Luke Skywalker, secretly leads the struggling Rebellion in their mission to overthrow the Galactic Empire. During the Battle of Endor, the Princess discovers Luke to be her twin brother, separated at birth to protect them from their father, the villainous Darth Vader. Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi had placed them in hiding because he knew that if Vader’s offspring were allowed to realize their latent Force abilities, they would be the only hope in returning peace and order to the galaxy. Through this realized potential and strong resolve, Leia helps the Rebellion succeed in bringing the Empire’s tyranny to an end.
R2-D2 and C-3PO
The ever-faithful droids of the Rebel Alliance, R2-D2 and C-3PO make a remarkably capable team. R2-D2 is a feisty astromech droid of surprising determination and resourcefulness. C-3PO is fluent in over six million forms of communication, and is an essential companion to his master Luke Skywalker and to the Rebel Alliance.
Han Solo and Chewbacca
A former smuggler and space pirate, Han Solo is the rugged, devil-may-care captain of the Millennium Falcon. Chewbacca is first mate and co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon, and together they make a formidable team. The mighty Chewbacca communicates in a series of growls, grunts, and fierce roars, and Han is one of the few who understands the Wookiee’s native language.
Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi
In the days of the Old Republic, Jedi Master Yoda was the most wise and powerful of all Jedi. Diminutive and unassuming, Yoda had no equals in his keen insight into the Force, or in his agile skill with a lightsaber. For over 800 years, Yoda instructed young Jedi and instilled in them a profound sense of discipline, strength, and unity. Obi-Wan Kenobi was once one of those young Jedi Knights instructed by Yoda. After the fall of the Jedi, Obi-Wan retreated to the isolated Jundland Wastes on the desert planet Tatooine.
